Losing Weight And Not Exercising?

It as been a week since I’ve stopped formally exercising.  I still walk around and play, but I haven’t done any running, jogging, or weightlifting.

Today’s weight:  184 - 3 pound loss since I stopped exercising.

During this time, I haven’t really stopped myself from eating sweets, however I have limited my intake of them.  I also made sure the sweets had a lot of fat in it (at least 50%).

I assume a lot of this weight loss is water, but whether some of it is fat or muscle remains to be seen.

I’ll be going to the Philippines tonight for 2 weeks, so I’m not sure if I’ll be posting on here.  Over there, I’ll be walking and playing as well.  I’ll also eat like the Filipinos do over there.  Can’t wait!

My Doctor's message regarding my high cholesterol numbers

I took the advice of http://joshsands.com/ and asked my doctor about his thoughts on my cholesterol results.  Here’s his response

“Andre: Your LDL (bad cholesterol has gone up ) it was 92 on 3/14 (this was a good result) , now it is 144 ( a bad result ). You need fat about 30 % but it should be good fat ( as much as possible ).”

I asked him about his thoughts on the LDL subtypes.  The harmless Big and fluffy types or harmful small and dense types. I’m waiting on his response…

Not worried about my cholesterol results

It seems that a lot of low carbers are having the same type of cholesterol results that I’m having and I’m not worried.  I emailed my doctor asking for his opinion, so I hope to get his answer soon.  I’ll be headed to the Philippines tomorrow night, and I can’t wait.  It’ll be really easy to maintain my “diet” over there because:

1.  Food is natural

Coke is the go to drink at every meal.  I’ll be drinking it because the coke in the Philippines is made with real sugar.  I’ll still need to watch out for fried foods cooked in vegetable oil though.

2.  Food is fatty

Filipino food is known to be very greasy, which is a good thing for me!  I can’t wait to eat the food there.

Cholesterol analysis

I’ve been reading that a lot of low carb/high fat dieters are getting similar cholesterol numbers that I am.

Here’s a link showing an alternative way to look at the cholesterol numbers.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/01/02/cholesterol-irrelevant-to-heart-disease-risk.aspx

“Generally the HDL/Total Cholesterol ratio should be above 25 and preferably in the 30s. If it is in the 40s, that nearly guarantees immunity from heart disease.”

“The triglyceride ratio should be below 2.0.”

Here are my results:

HDL/Total Cholesterol =  31 - GOOD!

Triglyceride/HDL  = .91 - GOOD!

Based on these 2 tests, my cholesterol numbers are good.

Am I just trying to fit a square in a circle?  Am I just trying to find a way to justify this really awesome eating lifestyle?

I would be lying if I said I was 100% confident that my cholesterol results are good.   I mean…this isn’t just about superficial weight loss…this is actually talking about my life….

My mood is awesome. I have a lot of energy. I haven’t been irritated or grumpy in a while.  I’m enjoying my life.  Shouldn’t these be the indicator of good health?

Hi! I really like your blog and I noticed you eat a lot of yummy things that I could eat while doing the Atkins diet! Care to share any yummy recipes? :D

Thanks for the follow1  I’m eating LOTS of yummy things, however I’m not on the Atkin’s Diet.  I like to call my diet a “high natural fat” diet.  Here are some atkin’s food I love cooking:

Chicken wings deep fried in lard

Filipino Adobo with Pork ribs

Bacon and eggs

Roasted Chicken

Shocking Blood Test Results

All the results are in, and I am very shocked.

FYI, here are my results taken about a month and a half ago.

Component                Your result        Standard rangeUnits

GLUCOSE, FASTING   101                   70 - 99mg/dL

Component                Your result  Standard rangeUnits

CHOLESTEROL           166            <200mg/dL

TRIGLYCERIDE           57             <150mg/dL

HDL                           63             >/=40mg/dL

LDL CALCULATED       92              <100mg/dL

CHOLESTEROL/HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN    2.6   <5.0

Here are my results from yesterday

Component                Your result    Standard range    Units
GLUCOSE, FASTING    101              70 - 99                mg/dL

Component              Your result    Standard range    Units
CHOLESTEROL         230              <200                   mg/dL
TRIGLYCERIDE         71               <150                     mg/dL
HDL                        72                 >/=40                  mg/dL
LDL CALCULATED    144                <100                    mg/dL
CHOLESTEROL/HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN    3.2       <5.0

My macros have been around 20% protein/ 20-30% carbs/50-60% fat

I’m really damn shocked with these numbers because I didn’t expect them to rise so high and so fast.  My total cholesterol went up by 64 points, my HDL (good cholesterol) went up by 9 points.  The one that concerns me is the LDL, the supposed “bad” cholesterol.  It rose 52 points!  It’s 44 points over the recommended allowance.

I think any medical doctor will say that my cholesterol numbers are not good and that I am doing harm to my body.  I didn’t change this diet because of weight, I did it because of health.

Am I gambling away my health by eating this way?

Am I being delusion?

Based on Taubes book, there is no correlation between high cholesterol and heart disease.  A better indicator is the ratios between triglycerides and HDL.  Also, I know there are different types of LDL.  Fluffy large ones, and small hard ones.  How do I know which ones I have?

I need to read more about cholesterol and how to interpret these numbers.

If anyone has definitive information on how to interpret these results, please leave it in my ask.  Thanks :)

I Just Got My Coconut Oil!

Look what we got in the mail from Amazon!  I’ve never cooked with coconut oil, so I’m super excited.  When I opened up the jar, I immediately put a spoonful in my mouth.  It was pretty much like I was in coconut heaven.  It’s very creamy and tastes exactly like fresh coconut.  Here’s my wife modeling the coconut oil.

image

I immediately did some cooking experiments with this oil.  I’ve read that movie theaters used to pop corn with coconut oil, so that’s what I tried.  I popped the kernels in coconut oil, then after it was done popping, I put butter and salt.  It’s like the best popcorn ever.  My wife and I added a peanut butter dipping sauce just for fun :)

image

After, that I wanted to see how the coconut oil tasted with meat.  I grabbed my leftover easter roast beef and fried it in the coconut oil.  I got a little bowl of rice and put the beef and oil in it.  The taste was interesting….  I didn’t like it really.  The combination of the coconut taste and roast beef didn’t match well.  Even the flavor of the rice wasn’t enhanced by the oil.  Maybe I put way too much oil?  I was really getting sick of the flavors.  Anyways, lard will be my oil of choice when I cook meats in the future!

Update:  I’m feeling nauseated right now.  I think I had too much coconut oil :)

Blood test day!

I had to do a 12 hour fast, so I couldn’t eat after 8pm yesterday.  It’s not bad because I ate a ton of roast beef and corn, all cooked in bacon grease.  I finally used it all up!

Weight in the morn: 185.  Hopefully the weight loss continues.

Here are my blood test results from 3/11/2011, which is a week after I started my high fat diet.  This is also when I was 11 pounds lighter.  As you can see, my numbers are phenomenal.  I assume my total cholesterol will go up, but hopefully the triglyceride/HDL ratio will still be good.

Fat absorption of carbs

Here’s one of my many weird theories I have from time to time.  I like writing them down so that I don’t have to think about them anymore :).

While I was cooking my egg and ham in my leftover bacon grease, I was noticing that my food wasn’t absorbing the grease.  This is a very good thing, which is one of the reasons why deep frying isn’t bad for you.

It led me to think, how did people back then use up the leftover grease?  Then it hit me!  Filipinos usually pour the leftover sauce(fat) on their white rice  (carb), and the white rice would absorb the fat.  We can add flour (carb) to the leftover grease and make a gravy.  We can add in potatoes (carb) and it’ll crisp and absorb the fat.  We can also add vegetables (carbs), and the fat will coat the veggies

As a side note, when I switched to brown rice, I noticed that the brown rice barely absorbed the fat.  This could be why Asians chose to process the rice.  They wanted the fat absorption quality of the rice.

Maybe Carbs serve as a delivery system for Fat?

Weight update:  187 - Guess I didn’t gain weight from the Easter dinner rampage.

Easter Dinner Recap

I wish I could have taken a picture of what I ate for dinner, but it would be ugly.  A massacre really lol.  My uncle’s house always has a lot of good food, so I helped myself :).  This dinner actually started around 4pm and it was nonstop eating/snacking til we left at 9pm. Some food highlights

Balut - Fertilized duck egg with a nearly developed embryo.  It is freaking disgusting to look at, and even more disgusting to eat.  For the past 3 years, I’ve tried parts of it, but today I was actually eat the whole thing by myself.

Fried Chicken Skin - No chicken meat, just the skin.  Heaven in my mouth.

Roast Beef and Honey Baked Ham - These were my go to meats when I was hungry.  I pretty much gorged on as much meat and fat as possible, which has been my strategy during family parties.  I love it.

Here are my estimated macro intake for the “dinner”.

143g protein, 79g carbs, 70g fat, 1593 calories - 40% fat

Overall for the day,

204g protein, 172g carbs, 128g fat, 2753 calories - 30% protein, 26% carbs, 44% fat

In general, you’re not supposed to worry about your diet during holidays.  It’s cool to see that even on a holiday, my calorie intake is still below my calorie limit (2800).

I am however worried that the scale will not be nice to me tomorrow.

I’m not going to be working out for the next 3 weeks, so any weight gain can’t be attributed to muscle anymore.

Happy Easter!

Weight update:  Back to 187.  Hopefully it’s all water!  I’m bloated and I haven’t had a BM yet.

Yesterday I had a decent size breakfast (600 cal), but had a huge lunch because it was my grandma’s bday party.  We Filipinos love having family parties with tons of food.

When dinner time came around, I was not hungry.  It’s a very weird feeling to not be hungry when meal time comes around.  I eventually ate a cookie and coffee with half and half.

Easter, we’ll be spending time with family.  Can’t wait!

hey! nice to meet you! I just read 'If I eat carbs, I make sure to add as much natural fat as possible', just wondering if there is a scientific reason for it or just your prefrence?

Great question!

Here is the gist of why I’m adding lot of “natural fat” to my diet.

From the beginning:

If you eat too many carbs, your blood sugar will increase. Insulin gets called in to process the blood sugar for energy, however if there’s too much blood sugar, insulin will convert the blood sugar into fat.

This is why low carb diets work.  If you don’t eat that many carbs, there’s no way to get any excess blood sugar to get converted into fat.

What are some other ways to lower blood sugar?  Eating low glycemic index foods.

The glycemic index is the measure of how fast a food raises your blood sugar.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycemic_index

Here is the glycemic index for 100+ foods from Harvard University.

http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsweek/Glycemic_index_and_glycemic_load_for_100_foods.htm

I’ve read that Fat slows down the absorption of carbs in the body, so if you look at this chart, look for really high fatty foods.  You’ll see some “bad” foods actually have a low glycemic index (55 or less). Also, note the lower fat version of foods actually have a higher glycemic index.

Ice cream, premium (haagen daz, full fat) - 37

M&M peanuts - 33

Chicken Nuggets - 46

Pizza, Super Supreme - 36

Banana cake, made with sugar - 47

So, we’ve been told sugar is bad for us because it’ll raise our blood sugar.  Therefore, we think anything sweet is bad.  Chocolate, ice cream,…

However as you can see with this chart, the INCREASE of fat in the food lowers the glycemic index.

Based on this logical conclusion, I can take a hamburger bun with a glycemic index of 61 and lower it by adding hamburger meat with a glycemic index of 0, and cheese with a glycemic index of 0.  The addition of the fat SHOULD lower the glycemic index.  I don’t know for sure because there’s no chart that shows the glycemic index of a cheeseburger.

Ok so that’s the science behind why I’m doing this.  There’s also observational evidence this is true.  Think of all the “bad” carbs people eat.  They are normally associated with fats.

Bread with butter/peanut butter/cheese

Potato with cheese, sour cream, bacon

Cereal with milk

Hamburger bun with cheese/hamburger meat

I haven’t found any formal studies that show this “diet” works.  All the studies I’ve seen single out either fats or carbs, and don’t take into account the overall construction of foods.

If you watch Fat Head on netflix/hulu, Tom Naughton loses weight by eating fast food everyday.  This is neither a low carb, nor low fat diet, and he still lost weight, and emphasized he was really happy.

I want to emphasize the addition of “natural” fats.  Read up on how your favorite oils are made, and you’ll notice that all refined vegetable oils are not made naturally.  In general, I cook with animal oils (lard, butter mainly). If I do use vegetable oil, it needs to be cold pressed.

This “diet” might be more closely related to the Atkin’s maintenance phase, which less restriction on carbs.  This “diet” has not really been published anywhere, so I’m kind of the guinea pig.  However, if I can maintain a healthy weight with this, then it actually is the ultimate diet.  Eat whatever you want and still be healthy.

Here are some yummy things I’ve been eating:

Butter Croissants slathered with extra butter

Home made lasagna made with 75%/25% ground beef, and whole milk versions of cheeses

Spaghetti with a block of melted cheese

Crackers with really fatty cheese (brie)

Deep fried breaded chicken  (deep fried in lard)

Five Guys Little Bacon Cheeseburger  (I can’t finish the normal one)

In and Out Double Double

I hope this answer helps!  Please if you have any questions, let me know.

Feeling disgusted by fatty foods

When I was on my low fat diet, I would hate to eat fatty foods.  I didn’t like the way it made me feel.  Like when we would go camping and I would eat a bratwurst sausage, and I felt disgusted eating it.  After eating the sausage, I physically wouldn’t want to eat anything else because I felt so disgusted.

Now that I’ve included fats into my diet, that “disgusted” feeling, was actually more of a mental projection.  I was brainwashed to think fatty food was bad for me.  The physical feeling of not wanting to eat anything else, was simply fullness.  Back then, the feeling of being full was something bad.  Now, I love it!

Oh You Silly Scale

Last night my wife and I went to karaoke at a korean restaurant for her coworker’s bday.  We had tons of fun eating seafood pancake and fish (go gal be) because of good friday.  I also drank about 5 shots of flavored soju, all while singing our lungs out.   This is how we should live life.  Enjoying and being happy amongst friends and family.

I was still bloated last night, so I just chugged water the rest of the night.  I woke up at 5:30am this morn to pee and BM, and weighed myself to find out I was still 187.  ARGH.  I still felt bloated, so I drank a ton more water, then fell back to sleep.  I eventually got up at 9am, peed, and weighed myself.

184.  WTF.

3 pound loss in like 3 and a half hours?  When I weighed myself, I wasn’t bloated, so it’s all water weight.

I find it so weird how much water our bodies can retain.

Today, we’re driving my in laws to LAX, and then tomorrow we’re driving my friends to LAX.  We live in San diego, which is like 2 hours away.  Need to buy pork rinds, nuts and beef jerky, to keep me awake :)
